T.J. Mihaila was born in the Philippines and has lived in Australia, Sri Lanka, Abu Dhabi, and the United States. He wrote his first book of poetry at the age of fourteen, after learning the principles of creative writing from his uncle, who was a teacher. Mihaila went on to study law at Melbourne University before turning to full-time writing at age twenty-two
